Teaching

I facilitate upper-division undergraduate courses and seminars in ecology, soil science, microbial ecology, mycology, and environmental science, with a focus on global change and climate justice. My teaching emphasizes hands-on learning, fostering a deep understanding of ecological systems and their role in addressing environmental challenges.
As a faculty mentor and research supervisor, I have guided numerous undergraduate researchers across a range of academic institutions, including UConn, Chapman University, Scripps College, Pitzer College, Harvey Mudd College, Pomona College, Claremont McKenna, Hampshire College, Appalachia State University, Sonoma State University, Prescott College, Simon Fraser University, University of California Riverside, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Berkeley.
Since 2001, I have designed and led educational programs in ecological restoration, bioremediation, and fungal ecology in diverse settings. Notably, as a NSF teaching fellow, I taught Biology and Human Anatomy and Physiology to at-risk youth at Cesar E. Chavez High School in Santa Ana, CA, fostering scientific curiosity and empowering students through accessible, applied learning.
experiential learning
I believe that the best learning happens through active engagement. My teaching approach emphasizes hands-on, inquiry-based experiences that empower students to apply scientific concepts to real-world challenges. Through fieldwork, lab research, and community-based projects, I guide students to develop practical skills while fostering critical thinking and environmental stewardship.
From ecological restoration to bioremediation and mycology, I design immersive learning experiences that connect academic knowledge with pressing global issues, preparing students to become thoughtful and solution-oriented scientists.
