Institutional service

Mia has made significant contributions to the academic and scientific community through various institutional service roles. She has served as a Faculty Advisory Board member for the Environmental Science major at the University of Connecticut since the 2023 academic year. Mia is also a member of the Search Committee for the Extension Professor of Soil Science, and Director of the UConn Plant and Soil Health Center (2023-present) and the Recruitment Committee for 2024. Additionally, she contributed to the Seminar Committee at UConn in 2024, playing an active role in the development of academic and professional programming.
Beyond her work at the University of Connecticut, Mia has held leadership positions within the Mycological Society of America (MSA). She chaired the MSA Student Awards Committee (2020-21), co-founded both the Diversity Committee and the MSA Student Section, and served on the MSA Endowment Committee in 2024. Mia’s dedication to fostering growth and inclusion within the field of mycology has been pivotal in advancing these initiatives. She has also reviewed proposals for the National Science Foundation, demonstrating her commitment to supporting research funding in the sciences.
Mia actively contributed to various scientific organizations and journals. She reviewed for high-impact journals such as Ecology, Ecosphere, Fungal Ecology, and Global Ecology and Biogeography, among others. Additionally, Mia was involved with the Society of Conservation Biology’s Orange County Chapter, where she served as a board member and former liaison with UCI. She was also a member of the Ecological Society of America’s Student Section, furthering her involvement in the academic and scientific community.
